1. Quick Media Marketing Tip
================================================================

When pitching a story to a media contact, keep it brief.
You'd be amazed at how much you information you can convey
in a few seconds.

Good example: A famous Boot Hill epitaph:

Here lies Lester Moore.
Four slugs from a .44.
No Les no more.

Part 2 of 2

When it comes to getting free publicity from your local
newspapers, radio, and TV stations, forget sayings like,
"You get what you pay for," and "There’s no free lunch."

There actually ARE dozens of ways you can get
your face, your voice, your picture, and your story in print or
on the air without spending a dime on advertising. Rarely
though, does it happen through simple good fortune.

For years, media-savvy marketers have used the techniques below
to generate thousands-- even hundreds of thousands--of dollars
worth of advertising and publicity, at little or no cost. You
can do the same.

FUNDRAISERS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Charity events and stories about community involvement
appeal to the media for a couple of reasons.

1. Media people very sensitive to criticism that "You only
want to tell bad news," and will make every effort to relate
uplifting, positive stories whenever possible.

2. It's in their best interest to build goodwill by taking
part in community events.

3. In the case of radio and TV stations, they MUST show that
they're serving the community. Otherwise, their FCC license
would be in jeopardy.

4. For the most part (there are exceptions), they're good-
hearted people who REALLY DO WANT to help others.

So, when you want to generate new traffic or more traffic to
your business or web site, consider hosting a fundraiser for
a charity or community organization. Let the media know
you're involved through a news release.

It's often a good idea to ask a high profile person from the
media to be your honorary chairperson.

FROM VETERAN TV REPORTER AND ASSIGNMENT EDITOR FRANK GUERRA, GO

Also, if possible, offer the media a story about someone who
has benefited from the charity. If you can "humanize" the
work the charity is doing, "put a human face on it" so to
speak, your chances of getting coverage (that is, publicity),
will skyrocket.

NEW TECHNOLOGY STORIES

Got a great new gizmo that will help speed
up service or make life more convenient for your customers?
Let the local media know about it, and offer to show them how
it works. Example: when some restaurants started taking to-go
orders by email.

Because you’re in the business, some technological changes may
seem basic and everyday to you, but they have a gee whiz
quality to consumers and reporters. So it’s often worth a call
or a letter to your local media.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES" STORIES

These often overlap with stories about new technology.
They’re examples of trends and innovations.

For instance: when my wife and I opened the first Subway Sandwich
Shop located inside a South Texas convenience store, we were sure
to put out a news release to local newspapers and TV stations.

The San Antonio Business Journal responded by doing a front page
story, including a color picture of us at our location. Buying
the same amount of advertising space in the Journal would have
cost thousands of dollars.

One final thought on dealing with the media. Even highly
paid public relations pros don’t always succeed in getting the
coverage they’re looking for. But with some creativity,
imagination, and persistence, you can find yourself on the air
or in print more often than you could have ever imagined, in
places you never thought possible.
