1. Our Computer Radio Show Makes Its Debut

Are you a techno geek? Or are you more "techno-meek?"

Either way, you'll learn how to make better use of the internet
by tuning into our new radio show every Saturday afternoon.

This week's guest is Bart Baggett, well known internet marketer
and even-better-known handwriting expert.

Bart will tell how he's used the internet to build his
credibility as an expert in his field--resulting in TV
appearances on CNN, Fox, Montel Williams and dozens of other
programs, plus more than 1300 radio shows.

Our program is called Roadrunner Radio. It's named for the

I co-host the program with Darrin Schroeder, a former software

The Difference Between "Advertising" And "Publicity"

Ask the average TV viewer, radio listener, or newspaper reader,
"What is the difference between "advertising" and "publicity" and
they probably wouldn't be able to tell you. They might even say
something like, "There is no difference. They're both the same

But they definitely are not. Not by a long way. And knowing the
difference can put a lot of money in your bank account. Not
knowing the difference can mean spending cash for something you
could just as easily get for free.

Take this example:

Although I have spent most of my adult life in broadcasting, my
wife and I operated a chain of Subway Sandwich Shops for nearly
ten years.

We were the first franchisees in South Texas to open a property
inside a convenience store. Almost anything that is a "first" is
likely to draw media attention. So I pitched the story to a
reporter at the San Antonio Business Journal, telling him that
"strategic alliances" between operations like Subway and Texaco
were a growing trend (a "trend" is another automatic media
attention-grabber) and the Business Journal could show itself to
be out front by doing a feature.

About two weeks later, Dianne and I showed up on the front page,
with sandwiches in our hands and a huge Subway sign in the

It was great publicity because it was free. I calculated that if
we had bought a similar amount of advertising (not free), it
would have cost around eight thousand dollars.

My friend and radio co-host Darrin Schroeder can vouch for the
power of free publicity.

Darrin and I do a weekly computer talk show on KLUP Radio, A-M
9-3-0 in San Antonio (webcast at http://www.klup.com). But
Darrin used to be vice-president of a small browser developer in
San Antonio.

Recently the San Antonio Express News ran a story about some new
software that had just hit the market. Darrin called the
reporter and offered a "follow-up" about his company, which had
just rolled out a similar product called CrystalPort.

Result: front page story, with a color picture, in the business
section several days later.

Both these success stories resulted from a single phone call to a
reporter. Both generated thousands of dollars worth of free
publicity without a dime being spent on advertising.

And there you have the difference between advertising and publicity.
Anyone in the media will be happy to sell you advertising.

Publicity is free.

In other words, as one of my friends in the public relations
business once told me,

"Advertising is what you pay for. Publicity is what you pray

The most successful marketers know how to pray, and what to do to
