2) Fax yourself onto the 11 o'clock news…Joe Gross owns the building where I used to have an office, and also runs a property tax consulting service.  I was visiting him recently and he mentioned he’d never seen assessments shoot up like they had in the past year.

“Have you seen any news stories about this?” I asked.  “Not one,” he replied.  “Well,” I said, “let’s fix that.”  I told him what to do, helped him put together a fax news release, and within a week Joe had been interviewed on two radio stations and was featured in a long TV news segment with at least 50,000 taxpaying homeowners watching

The story that’s nearest and dearest to my heart involves one of our Subway Shops.

press release3) Ride a trend to the top! In 1993, Subway had begun opening franchises inside gas stations, convenience stores, and super-markets.  My wife had the opportunity to open the first one in a “C-store” (that is, a convenience store) in South Texas. 

I sent a press release to a reporter at the San Antonio Business Journal, mentioning that there was a growing trend of fast-food/C-store combinations, and that readers would be noticing many more in the future.  Result? A front page story that would have cost more than $8000 if we had paid for the same amount of advertising space.
